Secure Network Installation for a 100-User Office Relocation, Chelmsford, Essex.
A project involved delivering a secure, fully wired network installation for an existing client relocating offices in Chelmsford, Essex. The new environment needed to support approximately 100 users, with a strong emphasis on security, performance, and future scalability.
Network Requirements
Each workstation required dedicated data and voice outlets to support daily operations. Due to the nature of the business, network security was paramount. Wireless connectivity was specified only for clients and non-secure use, ensuring core systems remained protected.
Site Survey and Comms Room Security
A detailed site survey of the open-plan office identified a centrally located communications room. To meet security and acoustic standards, the room was upgraded with:
- Secure access control
- Soundproof wall lining
- A controlled environment suitable for network equipment
This approach ensured both physical protection and long-term reliability.
Dual-Cabinet Network Design
The network design incorporated a two-cabinet solution, separating passive cabling from active equipment for improved performance and easier maintenance.
- Passive wiring cabinet: 45U, 800 × 800 mm
- Active equipment cabinet: 45U, 1000 × 800 mm
The cabinets were bayed together to streamline patching, improve airflow, and maintain clean cable routes.
Each cabinet included:
- Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
- Fixed four-point shelves
- Cantilever shelves
- Ventilated roof fan trays
- Four-ring vertical cable management bars
Category 6A Structured Cabling Installation
The installation included 250 Category 6 cables, providing high-speed data and voice connectivity throughout the office.
Cabling was terminated on:
- 19-inch rack-mounted Category 6 24-port patch panels in the comms room
- Category 6 shuttered outlet modules at each workstation
All links were tested using Fluke certification equipment, with detailed results supplied to support the 25-year manufacturer warranty.
Labelling, Patching and Configuration
Every outlet and patch panel was electronically labelled at both ends, enabling efficient, location, fault diagnosis and future expansion. Final patching was completed using Category 6 patch leads, configured to match the client’s service requirements.
Wireless Access and Future Expansion
Controlled wireless coverage was delivered using Ubiquiti UniFi AC Pro access points, providing secure client connectivity without compromising internal systems.
To future-proof the installation, 16-core OM4 fibre optic links were installed between floors. These links allow additional office areas to be brought online with minimal disruption at a later date.
Project Outcome
The completed installation provides a secure, scalable, and fully certified network infrastructure, supporting both current operations and planned growth.
