Project Overview

We recently designed and installled a high-performance whole house WiFi system for a large Victorian home in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. The property includes a self-contained annexe and a large external home office.

For years, the client struggled with poor WiFi. Dead spots and slow speeds caused constant frustration. Several previous attempts to fix the problem had failed.

Expectations were high. The requirement was simple: WiFi system that worked everywhere.

The Challenge: Delivering Whole House WiFi system in a Victorian Property

Previous works had pre-wired the property with Category 6 cabling, however, the outlet locations created a major design issue.

Installers had positioned all network outlets low down on the external perimeter walls. From a WiFi design perspective, this is far from ideal.

Access points perform best when installed centrally and at high level. Ceiling mounting allows signals to spread evenly across rooms and floors.

In this case, re-cabling was not an option. The building’s construction and the need to minimise disruption ruled it out.

The property layout added further complexity, thick Victorian walls, multiple floors, and separate buildings all affected signal propagation.

The Solution

To overcome these challenges, we designed a WiFi system network based on Ubiquiti UniFi enterprise‑grade hardware, chosen for its performance, scalability, and centralised management capabilities.

The final installation comprised:

  • 9 × Ubiquiti UniFi Pro U7 Access Points strategically positioned to maximise coverage despite the sub‑optimal outlet locations
  • 1 × Ubiquiti UniFi Pro 24‑Port PoE Switch to power the access points and support additional hard‑wired devices across the property
  • 1 × Ubiquiti UniFi Controller providing centralised configuration, real‑time monitoring, firmware management, and seamless roaming across the entire network

By carefully planning access point placement and transmit power, we were able to deliver strong, consistent WiFi coverage across all four floors, the annexe, and the external home office. The UniFi Pro access points provided the necessary range and throughput to compensate for their lower mounting positions, while still maintaining excellent roaming performance throughout the building.

The Result

The new system now delivers fast and stable WiFi across the entire estate. Users move freely between floors and buildings without dropouts.

The network easily supports video conferencing, streaming, smart home devices, and home working.

After years of frustration, the client was delighted with the results. For the first time, WiFi works reliably in every area.

Centralised management via the UniFi Controller also means the network is easy to monitor, maintain, and expand in the future, an important consideration for a property of this scale. It also enables remote support and ongoing optimisation, allowing performance to be fine‑tuned over time without the need for disruptive site visits.

Conclusion

This project is a great example of how thoughtful network design and the right choice of hardware can overcome physical limitations in even the most challenging environments. Despite less‑than‑ideal cabling positions, we were able to deliver a powerful, professional‑grade WiFi solution that meets both current and future needs.

If you’re facing WiFi challenges in a large or complex property, especially where re‑cabling isn’t an option, a carefully designed UniFi solution can make all the difference. We are here to help…please call Adam at Le Monde Comunications on 07860 926 349, or contact us here
